Johannesburg - Democratic Alliance leader Helen Zille on Saturday said it was good that President Jacob Zuma "at last found his voice" after he called ANC Youth league president Julius Malema to order.
"But it is not good enough for President Zuma to say this is an internal matter which the ANC will deal with as it sees fit. The fact that Malema defied the ANC is one thing," she said.
"But Julius Malema also defied a court ruling and showed contempt for the Constitutional guarantee of freedom of the media."
She said these were serious issues which was not a private internal ANC matter, and that a private telephone conversation and rebuke of Malema was not sufficient.
"The public want to hear clearly what action is contemplated to call Julius Malema to order. President Zuma has stated that the ANC Youth League is not an independent entity.
"If Julius Malema is re-elected to lead the ANC Youth League, it will show precisely where they stand and how they regard the Constitution of our country," said Zille.
The issue, she stressed, had "a way to run before it is satisfactorily resolved".
Zuma earlier told reporters in Durban that statements by Malema were "totally alien" to the culture of the ruling party.
Zuma also criticised Malema for defying a court ruling which banned the singing of the controversial "dubula ibhunu" (shoot the boer) song.
He said the ANC leadership was drawing the line and that there "would be consequences for anyone who crossed it".
